About Anchor River

The Anchor River offers the most southerly road-accessible steelhead fishing in Alaska — a small coastal river (~35 miles long) on the southern Kenai Peninsula, ~22 miles north of Homer on the Sterling Highway. The steelhead run begins in late August and peaks September–October; sea-run Dolly Varden arrive in July and remain through fall. The river is small enough for wade fishing throughout, with good fly water in riffles and pools. Rainfall-driven flows mean fishing improves after rain events that trigger upstream migration. ⚠️ 2026 king salmon forecast is low for the Anchor — verify current ADF&G emergency orders before targeting kings. A classic fall destination for Kenai Peninsula anglers.

Regulations

Alaska sport fishing license required ($20 resident / $100 non-resident annual). King salmon stamp required to fish for king salmon (residents $10/year, non-residents $100/year or short-term options). ⚠️ 2026 KING SALMON: low forecast on the Anchor — check ADF&G emergency orders before targeting kings; restrictions may apply. Steelhead season opens August 1 (upper river); peaks mid-late September through October. Dolly Varden open July through season end. Verify all current regulations and emergency orders at adfg.alaska.gov before fishing.
