About Big Flat Brook
Big Flat Brook in Sussex County is arguably New Jersey's finest wild trout stream, tumbling through Stokes State Forest in a freestone gradient that holds self-sustaining populations of brown and brook trout alongside stocked fish. The upper reaches are tighter and more classic brook trout water, while the lower sections open up for longer drifts and bigger browns. Its proximity to the Delaware Water Gap and limited access roads keep pressure manageable.
Regulations
Trophy Trout sections in place β check NJDEP for special area boundaries, size limits (typically 15" minimum), and seasonal restrictions. Wild trout in upper reaches are sensitive; handle with care. Standard NJ trout season applies outside trophy sections. NOTE: USGS gauge 01440000 is unverified β flow data may be stale or unavailable; check with local outfitters as backup.
