About Black River (Lamington River)

Known as the Black River in its upper reaches through Morris County's Hacklebarney State Park and as the Lamington River downstream, this freestone stream is one of NJ's most scenic and underrated trout fisheries. The gorge section through Hacklebarney is tight, rocky, and holds wild brown trout in its cold, shaded pools. Access through the state park is excellent and pressure is lighter than the South Branch.

Regulations

Standard NJ trout regulations apply. Hacklebarney State Park section is accessible and popular in season. Some portions of the lower Lamington flow through private farmland β€” confirm access. No current fly-only designations. NOTE: USGS gauge 01396000 is unverified β€” flow data may be stale or unavailable; check with local outfitters as backup.
