About Black River (upper)

The upper Black River drains the western Adirondack foothills through Boonville and Forestport — quality trout water in the headwater reaches before the river warms to bass and pike country downstream. Tributaries (Moose River drainage, Independence River) hold native brook trout, and the foothill hatches mirror the broader Adirondack pattern.

Regulations

Adirondack Park regulations apply in upper sections — check NYSDEC for current special regulation waters. Below Boonville the river warms to warm-water species. Wild Forest and State Land access throughout the upper watershed. Requires NYSDEC license.
