About Boardman River

The Boardman River near Traverse City has undergone a historic transformation following the removal of four dams between 2012 and 2023 — the largest dam removal project in Michigan history. The river is actively re-establishing its natural channel, and steelhead now access miles of newly free-flowing habitat. Wild brown and brook trout inhabit the upper river, with steelhead and rainbow trout in the lower reaches.

Regulations

Dam removal (2012–2023) opened new steelhead habitat — regulations for newly accessible reaches may differ from historical rules. Verify current MDNR regulations for post-removal sections. Michigan Fishing License required. Season opens last Saturday of April for trout. No active USGS gauge — post-dam-removal gauge data unreliable; check with Traverse City–area fly shops.
