About Chattahoochee River (Helen Headwaters)

The headwaters section near Helen is the most accessible trout water in North Georgia — public USFS land in the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest, stocked rainbows and browns, and reliable flows from the Blue Ridge plateau. Year-round trout season under 2026–27 Georgia DNR regulations, standard 8-fish daily creel limit. Wades best 50–250 CFS; gets blown out above 500 and runs spooky-clear below 50. Crowded on weekends; push upstream into the National Forest for solitude.
