About Cold River

The Cold River descends steeply from the Hoosac Range along the Mohawk Trail through Mohawk Trail State Forest in Charlemont before joining the Deerfield River. True to its name, the stream stays cold through the heart of summer — one of the few Berkshire tributaries where native brook trout can survive year-round without supplemental stocking. It is an intimate, tight-canopied mountain stream best suited to upstream presentations with small dry flies, soft hackles, and short-line nymphing techniques.
