Water temperature is at or above 68°F. At these temperatures trout are physiologically stressed and have a higher post-release mortality rate. Consider waiting for cooler conditions — early morning or evening — or choosing a tailwater with regulated temperatures.

About Grand River
The Grand River is the largest of Ohio's Steelhead Alley tributaries, draining 677 square miles across Geauga, Lake, and Ashtabula Counties. Many Ohio steelheaders consider it the state's best river when it's right — optimal flow is 250–400 CFS. The river offers a mix of gravel runs, deep pools, and accessible wading through Madison, Grand River, and Harpersfield. USGS site 04212100 is a water-quality 'super gauge' measuring flow plus temperature, dissolved oxygen, and turbidity — ideal for cold-snap bite timing. Brook trout in the upper watershed are protected (immediate release). Special regs apply from Lake Erie to SR 535 bridge.
Regulations
Ohio fishing license required (resident $25/year). No separate steelhead permit required. Steelhead creel limits apply from Lake Erie upstream to the SR 535 bridge. Brook trout in the upper watershed: immediate release required. 2026–27 regulation cycle effective March 1, 2026. Verify at wildohio.gov.
