About Guadalupe River
Texas's only world-class trout tailwater. Canyon Lake releases cold hypolimnetic water year-round, keeping the river in the 60s°F even in summer — but trout survival past spring is marginal. Guadalupe River Trout Unlimited stocks 40,000–50,000 rainbows each winter. The 7-mile trophy section below the dam has slot limits and artificial-only regulations in two zones, drawing serious fly anglers from across the South. A December–March destination for trout; a year-round fishery for Guadalupe bass and stripers.
Regulations
Texas Freshwater Fishing License required. Zone 1 (dam to Hwy 306 bridge): 12–18" slot limit for trout, 5-fish bag (only 1 fish ≥18"), artificial lures only. Zone 2 (Hwy 306 to 2nd River Road crossing): 18" minimum, 1-fish bag, artificial only. Below Zone 2: statewide trout regs (5-fish bag, no length limit). Trout stocking: November–March only. CFS alone does not indicate fishability — check Canyon Lake release schedule.
