About Gunpowder Falls

Maryland's premier tailwater trout fishery, flowing cold and clear for 7.2 miles below Prettyboy Reservoir through a steep-sided gorge in Baltimore County. The entire special management reach is renowned for large, selective wild brown trout keyed to complex hatches — Sulphurs, Tricos, Blue-Winged Olives, and Midges year-round. Tight wooded banks, consistent releases, and near-constant angling pressure have produced some of the most sophisticated fish on the East Coast.

Regulations

Prettyboy Dam downstream to Bluemount Road (7.2 miles): catch-and-release only, artificial flies and lures only, single barbless hook required. All trout must be immediately released. Open year-round. Below Bluemount Road: standard Maryland statewide trout regulations apply. CFS alone does not indicate fishability — check dam release schedules.
