About Hat Creek
One of California's most historic fly fisheries, Hat Creek's wild trout section below Powerhouse 2 (PH2) is the birthplace of the state's Wild Trout Program. The lower 3.2 miles from PH2 to Lake Britton offer spring-creek-style fishing for wild rainbows and browns in weedy chalk-stream pools and riffles. Fly fishing only, catch-and-release only. The gauge upstream of PH2 reflects natural creek flow; actual wild-section flows are controlled by PG&E powerhouse releases from PH2.
Regulations
Wild Trout Program waters. Lower 3.2-mile section (PH2 to Lake Britton): fly fishing ONLY, artificial flies only, single barbless hook, catch-and-release ONLY. Upper Hat Creek above PH2: general season regulations apply. California Sport Fishing License required. Note: gauge 11355500 is above PH2 β powerhouse output controls wild-section flows, not upstream creek flow.
