The Klamath River is undergoing a historic transformation following the removal of four major dams in 2023–2024 — the largest dam removal project in U.S. history. Salmon and steelhead are returning to hundreds of miles of newly accessible habitat. Regulations are actively changing as fish populations recover. Post-dam removal regulations are in flux as of 2024–2025. All wild steelhead (intact adipose fin) must be released statewide. Coho salmon (ESA-listed) are ILLEGAL to target or retain — release immediately if caught. California Steelhead Report Card required when fishing for steelhead.
