About Klamath River

The Klamath River is undergoing a historic transformation following the removal of four major dams in 2023–2024 — the largest dam removal project in U.S. history. Salmon and steelhead are returning to hundreds of miles of newly accessible habitat. Regulations are actively changing as fish populations recover. Always verify current CDFW regulations before fishing.

Regulations

Post-dam removal regulations are in flux as of 2024–2025. All wild steelhead (intact adipose fin) must be released statewide. Coho salmon (ESA-listed) are ILLEGAL to target or retain — release immediately if caught. California Steelhead Report Card required when fishing for steelhead. California Sport Fishing License required. ALWAYS verify current CDFW regulations — rules are being actively updated post-dam removal.
