About Monocacy River

The Monocacy River is a major Potomac tributary flowing through Frederick County, primarily a warmwater fishery but receiving trout stocking in select upper sections during the spring season. Early-season fly fishers working tributary mouths and spring-fed pool tailouts can find freshly stocked rainbows and browns before temperatures rise.

Regulations

Standard Maryland statewide trout regulations apply. Trout stocking is a spring put-and-take program; fish do not persist through summer in the main stem. Trout season opens the last Saturday in March; 5-fish daily creel, 7-inch minimum. Check Maryland DNR for current year stocking locations β€” this is primarily a warmwater fishery by May.
