About Namekagon River
The Namekagon River in northwestern Wisconsin is part of the federally designated St. Croix National Scenic Riverway — a wild, free-flowing freestone river with strong populations of brook trout, brown trout, and seasonal smallmouth bass. The upper river holds the best trout water; the Hex hatch in late June into July is the defining event. Floats out of Cable and Hayward access excellent public water.

Federally designated St. Croix National Scenic Riverway. Wisconsin Fishing License required ($20 resident + $10 trout/salmon stamp = $30). Season opens first Saturday in May. Verify Bayfield/Sawyer County special-regulation sections in current Wisconsin DNR trout regulations.
