About Pere Marquette River

The Pere Marquette is a federally designated Wild and Scenic River and Michigan's most celebrated steelhead fishery. Wild brown trout and steelhead share cold, clear water from Baldwin to Lake Michigan. The fly-only catch-and-release section from M-37 to Gleason's Landing is world-class. Fall and spring steelhead runs draw anglers from across the country. Note: Michigan does NOT have a blanket wild steelhead release requirement — unlike Pacific Northwest states, bag limits apply to all rainbow/steelhead regardless of fin condition.

Regulations

Federal Wild and Scenic River. C&R artificials-only section: M-37 bridge downstream to Gleason's Landing. 2024 NRC amendment reduced steelhead bag limits on the PM — verify current limits in Michigan DNR guide. Michigan does NOT require releasing wild steelhead. Michigan Fishing License required ($27 resident / $77 non-resident). Season opens last Saturday of April for trout; steelhead year-round on designated sections.
