About Rapid River
Arguably the best trophy wild brook trout river in the eastern United States. Six miles from Middle Dam (Lower Richardson Lake) to Lake Umbagog — no road access; canoe or walk-in only via private sporting camps. Wild brook trout averaging 2–4 lbs with fish to 5+ lbs documented. Fly fishing only, catch-and-release only.
Regulations
Fly fishing ONLY. Catch-and-release ONLY. No barbed hooks. Maine fishing license required. Check Maine DIFW for current regs. No live USGS gauge on this river — flows are entirely controlled by the private Middle Dam (Brookfield Renewable / Richardson Lakes). Check Waterline (h2oline.com) for daily dam release data. Above 900 CFS the river becomes unfishable; the 500–700 CFS window is the sweet spot.
