About Savage River

The Savage River tailwater below Savage River Reservoir in Garrett County is Maryland's best tailwater and a legitimate world-class trout destination, hosting the World Fly Fishing Championship in 1992. The Army Corps dam's cold hypolimnetic releases maintain near-perfect temperatures year-round, supporting exceptional populations of large wild brown and rainbow trout in a remote, rugged canyon setting. The 4-mile tailwater fishery rewards anglers who can read technical water and match demanding hatches.

Regulations

Entire 4-mile tailwater: Trophy Trout regulations β€” year-round open season, 2-fish daily creel limit, 18" minimum for brown trout. From dam to Allegany Suspension Bridge (1.25 mi): fly-fishing only. From Allegany Suspension Bridge to mouth (2.75 mi): artificial flies or lures only, single hook required. CFS alone does not indicate fishability β€” check dam release schedules.
