About Tonto Creek

Tonto Creek is the Mogollon Rim's most accessible stocked trout fishery, running through ponderosa pine canyon country near Kohls Ranch and Tonto Natural Bridge State Park with good road access from SR-260. AZGFD stocks rainbow trout regularly throughout the cooler months, making it a reliable family destination, while wild brown trout persist in less-pressured pools and the deeper stretches below most stocking sites. The natural travertine bridge and seep springs add unusually stable cold-water inputs near the Natural Bridge area.

Regulations

Standard AZGFD trout regulations apply β€” no fly-only sections on Tonto Creek. Check azgfd.com for current stocking schedule; fishing is best within a week of a stocking drop. The creek warms significantly by late July through September; mid-summer fishing is productive only in early morning. Tonto Natural Bridge State Park charges a day-use fee for access to lower creek sections near the bridge.
