About Ware River

The Ware River drains a forested upland watershed in central Massachusetts from the Barre highlands south toward the Quabbin Reservoir watershed boundary, offering consistent trout fishing with extensive public access through DCR lands. The river and its tributaries support a mix of MassWildlife-stocked rainbows and resident wild brown and brook trout, with the spring-fed headwater sections near Barre providing excellent early-season native brook trout fishing in cold, clear conditions. It is a workhorse central MA freestone fishery that rarely disappoints.

Regulations

Standard Massachusetts trout regulations apply: season opens April 1, stocked with rainbow, brown, and brook trout by MassWildlife. The Ware River is designated a major river β€” 3-fish daily limit applies. Certain sections near Quabbin Reservoir watershed lands carry additional access restrictions β€” check DCR and MassWildlife regulations before fishing in the upper basin.
