About Waterloo Creek

Waterloo Creek in Allamakee County is Iowa's most-famous catch-and-release trout stream — artificials only, catch-and-release only in posted sections, and a flagship of decades of Iowa DNR habitat work. Small, cold limestone-spring water with strong populations of wild brown trout and brook trout in headwater refuges. The USGS gauge was downgraded to stage-only in 2023 — no live CFS data is available, so check with regional fly shops before driving.

Regulations

ARTIFICIALS ONLY, CATCH-AND-RELEASE ONLY in posted sections — Waterloo Creek is Iowa's most-protected Driftless trout stream. Iowa fishing license required (~$22 resident annual + ~$14.50 trout stamp; 2026 fee changes — verify current rates on Iowa DNR before publishing). Year-round trout season. Verify Allamakee County section-by-section regulations in current Iowa DNR trout regulations. USGS gauge downgraded to stage-only in 2023 — no live CFS data; check with regional fly shops before driving.
