About West Fork Black River

A remote and largely roadless Apache trout stream draining the western slopes of the upper White Mountains, the West Fork Black River flows through some of the most pristine high-country habitat in Arizona before joining the East Fork to form the main Black River. The upper canyon reaches are genuine backcountry — expect difficult 4WD access or hiking to reach the best water, where wild Apache trout persist in cold, spring-fed pools amid towering ponderosa pine and mixed conifer.

Regulations

Valid Arizona fishing license required. Tribal permits from the White Mountain Apache Tribe are required for sections on or adjacent to Fort Apache Indian Reservation lands — purchase before entering. Apache Trout are catch-and-release only. Check AZGFD and White Mountain Apache Tribe regulations for current season dates and access routes; roads into the upper West Fork are primitive and may be impassable after storms. No active USGS gauge — check with local outfitters in Alpine or the Waterline app.
