PMDs continue (size 16-18). Cool canyon shading and spring water keep West Fork fishable into mid-summer — a real advantage over the main stem. Monsoon storms can flash flood the slot canyon — DO NOT enter the canyon if rain is forecast upstream.

About West Fork Oak Creek
A designated fly-fishing-only, catch-and-release tributary cutting through a stunning slot canyon off SR-89A, West Fork Oak Creek is Arizona's most demanding wild trout fishery. Spring-fed flows maintain cooler temperatures than the main stem, and genuinely wild brown and rainbow trout stack in the crystal-clear plunge pools of the upper canyon. The canyon walls rise hundreds of feet overhead — expect a scenic wade-and-fish experience but plan for weekend crowds at the trailhead.
Regulations
Fly fishing only, artificial lures only, catch-and-release — no bait, no harvest. Regulations are strictly enforced. Access via the West Fork Oak Creek trailhead off SR-89A (fee area). Canyon shading keeps water temperatures significantly cooler than main Oak Creek, extending the viable fishing season into July at upper sections. Check AZGFD for any seasonal closures.
