About West River

A tailwater below Ball Mountain Dam — Army Corps of Engineers controls releases, so flows are irregular and unpredictable; always check the gauge before driving. Famous for big, spooky browns that see significant pressure. The tailwater effect extends the season and keeps water cold through summer. Whitewater release events in spring and fall blow the fishery out for days. Trophy fish available but demanding.

Regulations

Tailwater below Ball Mountain Dam — flows are dictated by USACE release schedules, not natural precipitation. Check release schedules before driving. Jamaica State Park provides excellent access. Standard Vermont F&W regulations. Requires Vermont fishing license.
