About White River

The Bull Shoals tailwater on the White River is one of America's premier trophy trout fisheries — cold, mineral-rich water released from the bottom of Bull Shoals Lake supports trophy brown trout and rainbow trout year-round across the Ozark country between Bull Shoals Dam, Lakeview, Cotter, and Norfork. Heavy hydropower generation drives dramatic CFS swings; the prime wading window opens between releases. The available USGS gauge (07057370) sits at Norfork, well downstream of the prime tailwater between Lakeview and Cotter — it captures system flow including the North Fork confluence, but it is not a direct read on the upper tailwater. Year-round season, dam-controlled cold water means trout in a southern state.

Regulations

Arkansas fishing license + trout permit required (resident ~$10.50 + ~$10.00 trout permit = ~$20.50/year). EMERGENCY REGULATIONS in effect (Feb 2026 — hatchery shortage): Bull Shoals tailwater allows 2 rainbow trout under 14" only; all other trout species (brown, cutthroat, brook) must be released immediately; no brown trout may be kept. Year-round season. Verify current emergency regulations at agfc.com before fishing.
