About Whitewater River

The Whitewater River flows through Whitewater State Park in southeast Minnesota — one of the state's most-loved Driftless trout fisheries. Strong populations of wild brown trout, with rainbow trout in some sections and brook trout in cold tributaries. The river inside park boundaries is year-round catch-and-release only, protecting the wild trout fishery and providing a true year-round angling opportunity.

Regulations

YEAR-ROUND CATCH-AND-RELEASE ONLY inside Whitewater State Park boundaries — no harvest, year-round angling permitted in the park section. Outside the park: standard MN trout regulations apply (season opens second Saturday in April; closes per MN DNR rules). Minnesota fishing license required ($25 resident annual) + $10.75 trout stamp. Verify Winona County section-by-section regulations in current Minnesota DNR trout regulations.
